A new information gateway will provide a forum to accelerate the growth of the global market for renewable energies and energy efficiency.
The Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) announced the launch of REEGLE at the renewables conference in Beijing last November. The ‘database of databases’ is designed to connect the world's sources of information on renewables and efficiency, and will include information on all areas of clean energy, including jurisdiction, laws, policies, measures, finance, investment, reports and analyses.
The site will be launched on May 10 in New York City.
REEGLE will be expanded as REEEP and REN21 negotiate with database and information providers to allow access to the REEGLE search engine. The first version contains an ‘Actors Catalogue’ of organizations that are involved in policy, regulation and financing of renewables and efficiency, and contains links to 600 initiatives, partnerships and groups involved in renewables and energy efficiency.
REEGLE is a product of the Information Clearinghouse on renewables, a joint project of REEEP and REN21, with support from the department of environment in the Netherlands, Germany and United Kingdom.
The catalogue includes information about the focus, geographical reach and projects of various institutions (‘actors’). The database is designed to be “both a repository for information as well as an entry point to relevant data sources and other key providers of relevant information,” with the main objective to provide “relevant contacts for better information exchange and collaboration to all interested stakeholders and individuals” and allows narrow searches for institutions working in a specific country or sector.
REEEP was launched as a public-private partnership by the British government at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 in Johannesburg. In 2004, it was formally established as a legal entity in Austria with the status of an International non-governmental organization.
REN21 is a global policy network aimed at providing a forum for international leadership on renewables, with a goal to allow rapid expansion of renewables in developing countries by bolstering policy development and decision-making on sub-national, national and international levels. The concept was embraced in the political declaration of the International Conference for Renewable Energies in Bonn in 2004, after which REN21 was established.
